It would be nice if every dental visit resulted in a perfect, clean bill of oral health, but sometimes your dentist may discover a problem. When problems are addressed early, there are usually more options and less expense in treating them. If you habitually neglect a daily routine of brushing and flossing, then you may hear the words “ultrasonic deep cleaning” as a solution to bring your oral health back into shape. This procedure takes place our office, and helps maintain your healthy, natural smile.
What Is Ultrasonic Deep Cleaning?
When you visit your dentist for preventive checkups and cleanings, a highly trained member of the dental staff will remove plaque and tarter from your teeth. Plaque is soft, and can be removed with daily brushing. Tarter is plaque that has calcified (hardened) on the tooth surface, and must be scraped off by a dental technician. In some cases, tarter may have crept under the gums and moved towards the roots of the teeth. A deep cleaning (also called scaling and root planing) using ultrasonic technology can break up and remove the tarter without scraping. If not removed, this hidden tarter can lead to periodontal infection. Periodontal infection can eventually cause tooth loss, and has been linked to heart disease, diabetes and other systemic health issues.
Why It Helps Restore Oral Health
Plaque (and its hardened form, tarter) are left behind by microbes that feed on food particles left on the teeth. An ultrasonic deep cleaning leaves tooth surfaces free of bacteria and helps prevent tooth decay taking hold. Knowing your tooth enamel is strong, not only in the visible areas, but under the gums, gives you an additional reason to smile.
