Checkups & Cleanings

Checkups & Cleanings with Dr. Browne

Next to brushing and flossing your teeth consistently (at least twice a day, every day), regular checkups and cleanings are the most important preventive measure for your dental health. During each visit, your hygienist will professionally clean bacteria-rich plaque and tartar from your teeth, helping you prevent cavities, gingivitis, and other oral bacteria-related issues.

Besides cleaning, however, your appointment will also involve a visual examination, or checkup, by Dr. Browne himself. The inspection will allow Dr. Browne to ensure your teeth, gums, and oral tissues are healthy, or to spot early signs of trouble before they become too severe.

Questions About Routine Visits

How often do I need to schedule my checkups and cleanings?

In general, you should schedule a dental checkup and cleaning at least once every six months. Some patients may be able to wait a little longer, while others may require more frequent visits, depending on the state of their oral health.

What do you look for during a dental checkup?

The early development of tooth decay and gum disease leaves signs that you may not be able to notice, but that can be detected during your dental checkup. Dr. Browne will check the health of your teeth and the enamel surrounding them, the integrity of your gum tissues, the alignment of your bite, and more to determine if cosmetic or restorative treatment is necessary.

What is a deep cleaning?

A routine dental cleaning, also called a prophylaxis, involves the comprehensive removal of plaque and tartar from your teeth’s exposed surfaces (known as their crowns). When the bacterial films work their way to the roots of your teeth, which are underneath your gums, you may need a deep cleaning, or periodontal cleaning, to remove them. A deep cleaning is more extensive than a regular cleaning, and is meant to prevent the progression of gingivitis into gum disease.
