The Need for a Routine Screening
Did you know that oral cancer has a high mortality rate, with half of those diagnosed succumbing to the disease in just five years? A major factor in this high rate is the fact that the issue is rarely caught in the early stages! When caught early, there is a higher chance of recovery. Which is why we urge adults to have an examination for oral cancer every year, so we have a chance to catch it early, schedule a biopsy, and if needed, you can start treatment.
Common Risk Factors
Let’s talk about the risk factors for oral cancer. For some, tobacco use and excessive alcohol consumption can be a major factor, as can excessive UV light exposure. Which is why we always urge adults to avoid tobacco products, limit alcohol consumption, and wear protection when out in the sun for prolonged periods. You also need an annual screening even if you don’t have these risk factors, as oral cancer could still develop in your smile.
Symptoms
You should always let us know when you experience sudden changes to your smile, especially if these persist. For example, sores, lesions, rough patches, and areas with red and white splotches that don’t heal after two weeks are a major concern. You should let us know if you have changes to your voice or sore throat/hoarseness that lasts for more than a week or two. Sudden weight loss is also an issue.
