Ultrasonic Scaling Protects Your Oral Health

When you undergo a dental cleaning, this involves using a unique technology to better protect your oral health. Which is why we want to see you every six months! In today’s blog, Dr. Robert M. Browne talks about how we protect smiles with a routine visit and an ultrasonic cleaning.

When to Schedule a Visit

When should you see us for a dental cleaning? For kids and adults alike, we recommend a visit every six months, as this can help prevent issues like tooth decay and gum disease, as well as bad breath and teeth stains. If you have sore, red, and bleeding gums, then this could include gingivitis and even the early stages of gum disease. In a situation like this, then you should see us for a deep cleaning, also known as a scaling and root planing. Both can be done with an ultrasonic scaling!

Ultrasonic Scaling

To clean your smile, we will use a unique device known as an ultrasonic scaling device. The device will emit gentle soundwaves to break up and remove plaque and tartar from the surfaces of the teeth. For a routine procedure, this can be done every six months to remove buildup, and we usually follow it with a manual pick to break up the stubborn bits of tartar. The process only takes a few minutes, and can help fight bad breath, teeth stains, and gingivitis and gum disease.

If you are receiving a deep cleaning, then the scaling and root planing will use the same tools, but we will also remove buildup from the exposed roots as well. This can take one visit like a traditional cleaning, or we could require more than one for a scaling and root planing.

Reducing Buildup From Home

In between your six month visits, you can take steps to limit buildup from home as well. You should brush your teeth each morning for two minutes, and then repeat the process before you go to bed. You also need to floss every evening before you go to bed, as this removes the bits of sugar and starch caught between teeth and beyond the reach of a toothbrush. You can also help by limiting the amount of sugar and starch in your diet!
