Whether you have anxiety or special needs that make undergoing dental care difficult, we want to make sure your visit is comfortable and that you can receive the care you need to enjoy your time in the office. Which is why we offer local anesthesia, dental sedation, and more! In today’s blog, your Prairie Village, KS, dentist talks about our approach to patient comfort.
Local Anesthesia
Our team can directly numb the area being treated with a local anesthetic, which is helpful for treatment like dental fillings, crown placement or a deep cleaning to manage gum disease.
Dental Sedation
Dental sedation helps you enter a deep state of calm and relaxation, with little to no memory of the procedure. We will provide this for people undergoing more extensive treatments or who have dental anxiety that makes receiving care difficult. The option we choose will depend on multiple factors, like your age, weight, medical history, any medications you are taking, and your anxiety levels.
The most commonly prescribed option is a mild form known as nitrous oxide, or laughing gas. This is administered through a mask over your nose. You breathe in a gas and enter a deep state of calm. You will be conscious but likely have no memory of the procedure, and the effects can be adjusted during the procedure as needed. The effects then end once the procedure does, so you can drive yourself home, or possibly even return to work or school.
If you need a deeper state of calm, then our team could offer oral sedation, taken in a pill or liquid form prior to the procedure. You still remain conscious but have little to no memory of the procedure. We also have IV, the deepest option available, which is administered intravenously. With these options, you will be a bit groggy afterward and should have a friend or family on hand to take you home.
OraVerse®
We’re also proud to offer OraVerse®, which is a unique injection that will help the numbness following local anesthesia fade quicker, so you are not stuck with slurred speech, discomfort, or drooling for a lengthy amount of time. You could regain sensation in as little as an hour in some cases! If you have any questions about how our team will ensure your visit is a comfortable one, or if you would like to schedule your first exam and cleaning of 2025, then contact our team today to learn more.
