Patient comfort is important to our team. From advanced technology to dental sedation, we want to ensure your time in our office is a positive one! In today’s blog, Dr. Robert M. Browne focuses on our dental sedation treatments in particular.
When You Need Sedation
When do we recommend sedation for our patients? If they are undergoing a more extensive treatment option, this can ensure their comfort throughout, which is why we may recommend this for dental emergencies, replacing missing teeth, or extracting wisdom teeth. This is also helpful if you have anxiety or special needs that makes undergoing care a difficult process.
Selecting the Right Option for You
We take a few factors into account to ensure we choose the best option for you or your family member. We assess your overall anxiety level and the presence of special needs, and we also look at medications you take. Factors like age, weight, and overall medical history, are also taken into account!
Nitrous Oxide
Nitrous oxide is a more common and mild form, one appropriate for kids and adults alike. We will administer this through a mask over your nose, so you breathe in a gas and enter a state of euphoria. You feel comfortable and calm, and stay conscious and able to respond to the dentist as needed. At the same time, you will have little to no memory of the process. We can adjust the levels of sedation during the procedure with ease, and the effects wear off when the procedure ends, so you can return to your work or school, and potentially even drive yourself home!
Oral Conscious and IV
If you need a deeper state of calm then we could select an option like oral conscious sedation or possibly IV. With oral conscious, you will take a pill or liquid form and enter a deeper state of calm, with no memory of the process. You stay conscious and can respond to the dentist, but will be a bit groggy and need someone to take you home afterward.
With IV, the deepest option available, you enter a sleep-like state and have no memory of the process. You again feel groggy and will need someone on hand to take you home.
