A minor case of tooth loss can be helped with dental bridges. Total tooth loss can be addressed with a full set of dentures. But what if you have a situation that falls in between? In today’s blog, Dr. Robert M. Browne talks about addressing complicated cases of tooth loss with partial dentures, so you can feel great when you smile and also avoid the major long-term complications associated with losing natural teeth.
The Loss of Your Natural Teeth
When you lose teeth and have multiple gaps across your smile, this is too advanced for a bridge, but you could have enough natural teeth that a complete denture is not needed. But we can help with a partial! Remember, you need to replace missing teeth because otherwise, this could impact how you eat and speak, and could lead to issues like misalignment, TMJ disorder, bruxism (teeth grinding), and more.
Creating Your Custom Partial
To begin, we will need to make a thorough dental examination of your bite, so we can assess the cause of your missing teeth and also identify and extract any teeth that are severely infected or diseased. We then take detailed digital images and impressions of your bite from multiple angles, and use them to design and craft a new prosthetic.
The denture will contain new teeth made from lifelike and durable ceramic, and inserted into a base that mimics the appearance of gum tissue. This will be custom-made to fit comfortably and provide a balanced bite, and to look natural as well.
Securing Your New Prosthetic
When your new partial is complete, you will return to the office for placement. We will show you how to connect the metal clasps to your natural teeth, which keeps the partial firmly in place during the day. We will also explain how to clean and soak the denture to ensure it can last for years to come and restore function and beauty to your smile again. Our team also wants to monitor your oral health with routine visits for checkups and cleanings every six months, so we can monitor issues that could contribute to tooth loss, helping your remaining natural teeth stay in place if possible.
