A tooth extraction can help treat serious issues, the kind that impacts your smile’s stability and leads to major complications. For example, we can remove teeth to prevent wisdom tooth impaction, or stop the spread of infection to other parts of your bite. In today’s blog, Dr. Robert M. Browne talks about conducting a comfortable tooth extraction.
The Need for Tooth Removal
When do we need to remove a tooth? If one is so damaged that we cannot repair it with a cone, the we may need to take it out to avoid the spread of infection. The same goes for a tooth too decayed or infected to be treated with a root canal procedure and restoration. If a tooth stands in the way of orthodontic treatment, or impacts your bite’s imbalance and chewing function in negative ways, then we can also help with a tooth extraction. For older teens and people in their 20s, up to four new teeth could erupt. Known as wisdom teeth, these can undo your orthodontic treatment results, create misalignment, and damage teeth to cause infection. They could also only partially erupt, known as an impaction. To avoid these and preserve your smile, we can remove wisdom teeth before they even erupt!
Planning Care and Numbing Your Smile
To begin, we will need to look closely at the tooth, including the root structures and more, so we can plan removal and ensure we don’t encounter nerve tissues, blood vessels, or sinus cavities. To do so, we will use advanced imaging technology. Our team also wants to ensure the removal process is a comfortable one, even if you have dental anxiety about the procedure or special needs that complicates your ability to undergo care. We not only numb the tooth, but our team can also offer sedation to help you enter a deep state of calm and relaxation, with little to no memory of the procedure at all.
Tooth Extraction
When we have planned the process in detail and properly numbed your smile, we will then extract the tooth. We do so with a pair of forceps, and the process could take as little as a half hour. We then suture the area closed, and you are sent home with detailed aftercare instructions to ensure the area heals properly, and also prescriptions for medications to help keep you cozy throughout the process. We also remove the sutures and monitor your healing progress with a follow-up visit.
