If you have lost most of your teeth, then your ability to eat your favorite foods or even speak clearly could be threatened. But we can help address your advanced tooth loss so you can smile with confidence! In today’s blog, your Prairie Village, KS, dentist talks about our full dentures.
Advanced Tooth Loss
Losing most of your teeth could occur for a number of reasons, but the most common is periodontal disease, or more accurately, the periodontitis stage of the disease. Losing most of your teeth could mean limited meal options and poor nutritional intake, speech difficulties, and even embarrassment in social situations. Your jawbone could weaken as well. These missing teeth could mean the jaw itself erodes, losing mass and density over time to cause further tooth loss and an older appearance. To help preserve your smile, restore function, and help you enjoy better quality of life, we can provide a full set of dentures.
Creating Your Full Prosthetic
To begin, we will examine your smile and see if you need treatment for issues like gum disease, so we can manage the issue to prevent further complications, particularly if you receive dental implants. Our team will then extract the last few teeth gently, and take detailed images and impressions of your bite to create a custom set of dentures. Your new prosthetic will contain a complete row of ceramic teeth shaded to for a natural appearance. These will be set in a base that looks like gum tissue. Each one is custom-made to ensure a proper fit and a natural appearance.
Placing Your New Dentures
For traditional removable dentures, the prosthetic will be secured with natural suction or possibly the assistance of a special adhesive. These will need to be removed at night for cleaning and soaking. They tend to last about 5 to 10 years before they need replacement as the jaw ridge changes shape. However, if we insert dental implants into your jaw and attach the prosthetic to these, this helps modify and strengthen your jaw, so your jaw ridge maintains its shape and your prosthetic can stay in place for much longer. Our team can help you decide which option is best for you, and start you on the road to a full and beautiful smile.
