An infected tooth could be a source of major discomfort and without treatment, could even threaten the stability of your tooth. But we can provide treatment with an endodontic procedure, which keeps your tooth in place and stops discomfort. In today’s blog, your Prairie Village, KS, dentist talks about root canal therapy and keeping your smile full!
The Causes and Dangers of an Infected Tooth
How does a tooth become infected? The issue could begin when a tooth develops a cavity or a serious injury, allowing decay to form and grow. Lack of treatment eventually means the bacteria reach the inner pulp, the nerve center of your tooth. The tooth is then infected and without care, could essentially die as the pulp is killed. The tooth could then require extraction to prevent the spread of infection, or could fall out. But with a root canal, we can take on infection to keep your tooth in place and to avoid the persistent of painful symptoms.
Making Sure You Stay Comfortable
We always take measures to ensure that you are comfortable and relaxed when you see our team for treatment. For example, we will offer a local anesthesia to the tooth to numb the area. If you have anxiety about the procedure or dental care in general, we could discuss sedation to help you enter a deep state of calm and relaxation, so you feel comfortable and have little to no memory of the procedure at all. Your experience should be a positive one, and we strive to make sure this is the case!
The Root Canal Process
Our team will plan the process in detail, starting with digital x-rays to assess the position and severity of the infection. When you are sedated and ready, we will open the tooth so we can access and remove the tissues within. We then clean the side of your tooth thoroughly and add a special filling known as gutta percha. Our team then creates a custom dental crown and attaches it to the tooth. Once the crown is in place, this can complete the process and protect the tooth from further decay or infection. We take steps to ensure it looks natural and blends with your smile too.
