Do you have stained teeth? If you have dental discoloration, then we can help you obtain a brighter smile. With teeth whitening and other cosmetic treatments, we can remove stains or mask them. In today’s blog, your Prairie Village, KS, dentist talks about how we can brighten your smile!
Our Take-Home Whitening Kit
Our take-home teeth whitening kit is a great way to handle extrinsic teeth stains, the kind that form on the surfaces of our teeth. This is the most common kind, and is caused by factors like oral hygiene, the foods and drinks we consume, and tobacco usage. You first visit our office so we can take impressions of your bite and use them to create a custom set of plastic trays. We then send you home with these trays and multiple plastic syringes of bleaching gel.
At home, you add the gel to the trays and wear them for a specific amount of time, usually about an hour a day. This is repeated for about one to two weeks, and your teeth could be up to eight shades brighter as treatment wraps up. The trays help ensure the results are even across your smile and prevent saliva from diluting the strength of the gel. You can keep the trays and any leftover gel should you need touch-ups down the road. Better brushing and flossing habits, a healthier diet, and visits for cleanings every six months could help your results last longer!
Masking Permanent Teeth Stains
But what about intrinsic teeth stains? Also known as permanent discoloration, these form under the outer enamel and could be due to fluorosis, injury, or the use of certain medications. If you have a cause severe enough that we cannot remove them with our trays and gel, we could mask them! For example, we could use dental bonding to mask them using composite resin, which we shade to blend with the smile. Placement only takes one visit, and this can also address issues with injured teeth or gaps between them.
We could also mask these stains with porcelain veneers, thin restoration that we attach to the front facing sides of the teeth to instantly change the color and shape of them. Veneers could help offer a smile makeover for many people!
