When you have discoloration on the surfaces of your teeth, then we can help with teeth whitening. Our professional cosmetic treatments can brighten smiles, often by several shades! In today’s blog, your Prairie Village, KS, dentist talks about our teeth whitening treatment options.
The Onset of Teeth Stains
What causes teeth stains to form in our smiles? Over time, as we eat and drink particles of sugar and starch are left behind, trapped on or between the teeth. As bacteria break these down, this creates plaque buildup that makes stains more visible. If you consume beverages with dark pigments, such as soda, red wine, coffee, or tea, this could stain your teeth as well. Tobacco use is also a factor, as is poor brushing and flossing habits and a lack of dental cleanings. Fortunately, we can help remove unsightly teeth stains and brighten your smile, sometimes by as many as eight shades!
In-Office Teeth Whitening
Our in-office teeth whitening procedure can provide stunning results in only one sitting. This is perfect if you need results quickly before a big event, first date, or a job interview. You visit the office and we will place a protective covering over your lips and gums. We then apply a bleaching gel to the surfaces of the teeth, and activate the bleaching ingredients with a special light. We repeat the process as needed to remove stains and brighten your smile, with the total time taking as little as one to two hours.
At-Home Cosmetic Treatment
If you have more substantial stains, then we could prescribe our at-home teeth whitening option. With this selection, you visit our office briefly so we can take impressions of your bite and create a set of plastic trays, custom-made for your smile to ensure a proper fit. We then send these home with you, along with multiple plastic syringes of a powerful bleaching gel. When you are at home, you will add gel to the trays and wear them for a specific amount of time, usually about an hour. You then repeat this for a week to ten days, and your smile could be several shades brighter afterward. You then keep the trays and any remaining gel should, you need touch-ups in the months to come.
