We provide urgent care dentistry for our patients, providing dental emergency care to address damaged, knocked out, or even aching teeth. Care is needed to avoid complications that could lead to issues such as discomfort or even tooth loss. In today’s blog, Dr. Robert M. Browne talks about helping smiles with urgent care dentistry.
When You Need Urgent Care Dentistry
When should you contact our team for urgent care dentistry? If you have an injury or pain that is severe enough that needs immediate attention, but not severe enough that a 911 is called or an emergency room visit is needed, then you should reach out. Call us right away and if you reach us during our usual business hours, then we will try to see you same-day if possible or possibly early the next day. If we are closed, then call and leave a message so a team member can reach out with possible appointment times and tips for protecting your smile in the meantime. Lack of attention for an injury, even if it appears minor, could leave your tooth vulnerable to decay and infection, which could impact stability!
Responding to Your Dental Emergency
In the meantime, you can control bleeding with a cloth or a bit of gauze, and you can avoid major facial swelling with a cold compress to the side of the face. You can also take an over-the-counter pain reliever too. If a tooth is broken, try to recover any pieces if possible and bring them with you. If the tooth is knocked out, then pick it by the crown or root only, never touch the roots, and place it in a sealed container of milk or salt water, and bring it with you. If you are proceeding to our office right away, then you can return the tooth to the socket and bite down gently to hold it in place. If something is stuck between the teeth or under the gums, only use floss to try and dislodge, anything else risks damaging your teeth or gums.
Protecting Your Teeth from Injuries
To help lower the risk of future emergencies, be sure you wear a mouthguard when you play sports, practice martial arts, or box. Also, be sure you brush and floss to keep your teeth strong and free of decay that weakens outer structure, and avoid hard items like ice, popcorn kernels, or other items that could damage teeth.
