How do you feel about visiting the dentist? If you have anxiety or worry about discomfort, then talk to our team! We offer patient comfort to help ensure the process is a positive experience, and that you avoid lingering numbness. In today’s blog, your Prairie Village, KS, dentist talks about helping smiles and ensuring patient comfort.
Our Approach to Dental Sedation
If you have serious anxiety or fear of the dentist, or if you are undergoing a more extensive treatment option, we want to ensure the process is comfortable and you enjoy a positive experience in our office. This can also help those with special needs that complicates the ability to receive dental care. Our team will look at your medical history, medications you are taking, anxiety levels, and your age and weight to choose the best sedation option.
The most common and mild form is nitrous oxide, also commonly referred to as laughing gas. We administer this through a mask over the nose, allowing you to breathe in a gas that causes a calm and euphoric state. The effects can be adjusted during treatment and end once the procedure does, so you could potentially even drive yourself home or return to work or school.
For patients who need a deeper form of calming, we have an option taken immediately before the procedure, known as oral conscious sedation. Taken in a pill or liquid form, this helps you enter a deeper state of calm with no memory of the procedure. The grogginess afterward means you need to have someone on hand to take you home afterward.
The deepest form is IV, and a trained anesthesiologist will monitor you the whole time. You will enter a deep and sleep-like state, and will have no memory of the procedure at all. You will also need someone available to take you home afterward.
OraVerse®
If we need to numb an area of your smile directly with a local anesthesia, this can cause lingering numbness that lasts for hours following the end of your procedure. This can lead to slurred speech and drooling, and leave you feeling embarrassed and self-conscious. But we can help you regain feeling faster with OraVerse®! This is a unique sedation we inject into the treated area following the procedure, which helps limit the numbness so it passes in as little as one to two hours, so you can return to your normal routine much faster!
