Easing Your Discomfort
You can take steps in the meantime to lower your risk of complications and protect your smile. For example, you can take an over-the-counter pain reliever, and you can use cloth or gauze to stem any bleeding. To control facial swelling, apply a cold compress or ice pack to the side of your face. If a tooth is damaged, then try to recover any pieces and bring them with you. If the tooth is knocked out completely, pick it up by the crown portion, not the root, and put it in a sealed container of salt water or milk, and bring it with you. If this isn’t possible, you could place it into the socket and bite down gently to keep it in place.
