Repairing Summer Injuries With Urgent Care Dentistry

During the summer, kids and adults alike often play sports and engage in other activities that could lead to chipped or even knocked-out teeth. When this happens, you need treatment right away. Which is why your Prairie Village, KS, dentist is proud to offer help with Urgent Care Dentistry.

The Issues That May Require Urgent Care Dentistry

Urgent Care Dentistry is offered for dental emergencies that require immediate treatment to avoid complications like tooth decay, infection, and discomfort. For example, when a tooth is chipped or cracked you should see us right away. In fact, if an injury occurs to your face or jaw and no damage is visible, consider an exam as fractures could be nearly invisible to the naked eye.

You should see us if you have something stuck between your teeth or under your gums, or if you have sudden pain in a tooth. If a tooth is knocked loose or out completely, then let us know. The same goes for restorations that are loose or missing, or if a prosthetic or orthodontic appliance is damaged. Give us a call right away. If the issue happens during our normal business hours, we will try to see you same-day if possible. If the trouble occurs outside normal business hours, leave a message and a team member will reach out soon with possible appointment times.

Limiting Your Discomfort

After you call us, you can take steps to ease your initial discomfort. First, rinse with warm water and then use cloth or gauze to stem any bleeding. To prevent facial swelling apply a cold compress or ice pack to the side of the face. You can also take an over-the-counter pain reliever. If you can recover any pieces of your tooth, please do so and bring them with you. If a tooth is knocked out, only pick it up by the crown, never touch the root. Place the tooth in a sealed container of milk or salt water and bring it with you. Don’t use anything but floss to try and remove something caught between your teeth, as anything else risks damaging your teeth or gums.

Starting Your Repair

Our team will examine your smile to assess the cause and extent of your injury, so we can choose the best treatment option. For example, our team can conduct a dental bonding procedure to address minor damage in one sitting, using the same composite resin as our fillings. We also have custom crowns for more substantial injuries!
