When you receive a traditional dental bridge, you have a new tooth that lasts for 10 to 15 years. If you receive removable dentures, you could have new teeth that last for 5 to 10 years. But! With dental implants, we have a tooth replacement option that can last for decades, maybe even longer! In today’s blog, Dr. Robert M. Browne talks about what makes dental implants last so long.
The Longevity of Dental Implants
What makes dental implants last so long? Well, the implant portion! This is a small biocompatible post made from titanium, and one that looks like a tiny screw. This is surgically inserted into the jawbone, and the body will accept it as natural root structure. Which means the gradual loss of mass and density in the jaw that usually follows tooth loss is halted, and your jawbone and facial structure remain intact. You preserve your youthful appearance, avoid further tooth loss, and your new tooth can stay in place for decades, possibly a lifetime in some cases!
How We Place and Restore Them
To begin, we will examine your smile with digital x-rays so we can choose the best angle, position, and depth to insert your new root. We then guide the process with digital imaging and use local anesthesia and sedation to keep you comfortable. Once the new root is in place, we will attach an abutment that extends above the gum line and allows us to attach a crown. This finishes your new tooth and offers a lifelike appearance. If you have large gaps, then we could secure a bridge in place or even a complete set of new teeth, sometimes in only one visit too!
Keeping New Teeth Intact
Steps can be taken to help ensure your new teeth last and to protect your remaining natural teeth too. For example, you can brush twice a day and floss every evening, and limit the amount of sugar and starch in your diet. Try to avoid tobacco products and make sure you properly manage any inflammatory concerns, such as diabetes. Finally, be sure you see our team for a checkup and cleaning every six months, so we can keep a close eye on your smile.
