Our team wants to make sure that even if you have anxiety or a phobia of the dentist you can still enjoy a comfortable and positive experience in our office. To ensure good patient comfort, we can provide sedation and even a unique system that makes administering anesthesia comfortable too. In today’s blog, your Prairie Village, KS, dentist is focused on our methods for ensuring patient comfort, so everyone can enjoy a positive experience and look forward to their next appointment!
Dental Sedation
To help patients stay comfortable if they are undergoing more extensive treatments, such as dental implant placement, or to help ensure patients with anxiety and special needs remain comfortable during care, we can administer sedation. We have three options available for our patients. The most common is a mild form known as nitrous oxide, which we administer through a mask over your nose. The effects are immediate and end once the procedure does. We can adjust the effects during treatment and since the effects end so quickly, you can often drive yourself home or even return to work or school, especially if we use OraVerse® to end lingering numbness from your local anesthesia.
We also have oral conscious sedation, administered through a pill or liquid taken before the procedure begins. You enter a deeper state of calm and have little to no memory of the process. You will be a bit groggy afterward and need to arrange a ride home. The deepest form is IV, which we administered intravenously and offers a deep sleep-like state with no memory of the procedure at all. Again, you will need a ride home for some.
The OraVerse® System
Local anesthetic allows our team to numb specific areas of your smile correctly before we administer treatment. However, this could lead to a loss of sensation in your smile, with the numbness lasting several hours or even a major portion of your day. This can impact your day in negative ways. But we have a unique treatment that can help return sensation to your smile much sooner! With OraVerse®, our team will gently inject the medication in your jaw following the completion of your treatment. This helps you regain sensation and feeling in your lips, so you avoid drooling, slurred speech, and the discomfort of lingering numbness that usually follows local anesthesia. You could enjoy normal feelings in as little as one to two hours!
