Dental Sedation Provides Patient Comfort

encinitas dental sedation

We know that some people may feel nervous about seeing the dentist, or could have special needs or anxiety that complicates the ability to receive treatment. In these situations, we want to help! In today’s blog, your Prairie Village, KS, dentist talks about how we provide patient comfort with sedation dentistry and local anesthesia!

When You Need Calming Medication

We will recommend a local anesthesia when you undergo treatment that could otherwise be uncomfortable. If you are receiving treatment that is more extensive, such as tooth extraction or dental implant placement, then we could offer sedation, which provides a deeper level of calm. This is also helpful for patients with special needs or high anxiety levels! Our team will recommend an option based on your age, weight, medical history, medications you are taking, and your anxiety levels.

OraVerse® and Local Anesthetic

When you receive a local anesthesia, we numb the area where treatment is taking place currently. This also means that the numbness will likely last beyond the procedure and for much of your day, which can be uncomfortable and difficult for a lot of people. But we can help return normal sensations to your lips with OraVerse®. Following your treatment, we will inject OraVerse® into the area where the numbing has occurred. This will help restore feeling and normal movement or your lips and mouth, so you avoid issues like slurred speech, drooling, and the discomfort that comes with the use of a local anesthesia. For many, normal sensations are possible in just one to two hours’ time!

Sedation Dentistry

Our team also provides multiple sedation options. A mild option is possible with nitrous oxide, administered through a mask over your nose. You breathe in a gas and enter a state of calm, staying conscious but having little to no memory of the procedure. We can make adjustments during treatment, and the effects wear off quickly, so you could potentially return to work or school.

If you require a deeper level of calm, then our team could provide an oral conscious sedation. You take this in a pill or liquid form prior to the procedure, and enter a deeper state of calm, conscious but with no memory of the procedure. The effects take time to wear off, so have someone ready to take you home. With IV sedation, you enter a deep sleep-like state with no memory of the procedure, and again will need someone to take you home afterward.
