Safeguarding Your Smile With An Ultrasonic Scaling

The ultrasonic scaling device is a tool that we use in both dental cleaning visits and scaling and root planings. These treatments can safeguard your smile and help you maintain better oral health. In today’s blog, your Prairie Village, KS, dentist talks about how we help smiles with an ultrasonic scaling.

The Ultrasonic Scaling Device

The ultrasonic scaling device is a system that we employ as part of our traditional cleanings and our scaling and root planing procedures. The machine employs gentle vibrations and water to loosen and remove plaque and tartar from the surfaces of the teeth, quickly and comfortably. If there are any stubborn portions that resist the scaling device, we can gently remove these with a manual pick.

Dental Cleanings

We recommend a dental cleaning at least once every six months for our patients. Removing plaque and tartar buildup is essential because this helps lower the risk of tooth decay, gingivitis, and even gum disease. Removing harmful buildup also helps fight bad breath and teeth stains. Using the ultrasonic scaling device and a manual pick, we will carefully remove buildup from your smile in a few minutes. We then polish the teeth for a brighter appearance and to make it more difficult for plaque and tartar buildup to occur in between your routine six-month office visits.

Deep Cleaning

What about a deep cleaning, also known as a scaling and root planing? This is often recommended when a patient has gingivitis or the early stage of gum disease. The procedure is meant to help control the disease so it can be managed moving forward with preventive treatments. Again, we use the same tools as mentioned above, but we will also remove buildup from the teeth and exposed roots, and destroy harmful oral bacteria from beneath the gum line. Since this is a more involved procedure, we will take time to numb your smile and keep you comfortable. The procedure could take one visit or as many as four, depending on the severity of your buildup. We also complete this procedure by polishing your teeth!
