Providing Patient Comfort With Dental Sedation

When you have anxiety about visiting the dentist, or dread the numb sensation following care, this can stand between you and the healthy smile you deserve! But our team can help with options like dental sedation and OraVerse®. In today’s blog, your Prairie Village, KS, dentist talks about our approach to patient comfort before, during, and after your treatment, so you can return to your normal routine in a much shorter time frame!

When You Need a Calming Agent

When do you need a sedation option? This helps even patients with dental phobias enter a deep state of calm and relaxation, so we could offer this for those with anxiety. This can help those with special needs, or even patients with an overactive gag reflex. If you are undergoing more advanced oral surgical treatments, such as tooth extraction or even the placement of dental implants, then you could benefit from one of our calming options.

Dental Sedation

We have three different options to choose from. With nitrous oxide, we administer the calming gas through a mask over the nose. You breathe in the gas and enter a deep state of calm, remaining conscious but with little memory of the procedure. The effects wear off quickly, and you can even drive yourself home. Oral and IV sedation offer deeper states of calm, and the effects tend to take time to wear off, so have someone on hand to bring you home. Oral sedation is given in a pill or liquid form prior to the procedure, while IV is given intravenously and is the most substantial calming option. We can choose which is right for you based on your age, weight, medications, and your overall medical history and anxiety levels.

OraVerse®

When we numb your smile with a local anesthetic, this can help you feel comfortable during treatment. However, the numbing can last far beyond the end of the procedure, and for many this is quite annoying. But we have an option that can help! With OraVerse®, we can administer an injection that can help you regain the feeling and movement in your lips much quicker, so you avoid drooling, discomfort, and slurred speech. For many, regaining normal feelings only takes about an hour!
