How Sedation Ensures Patient Comfort

We want to take steps to ensure your experience is a comfortable one. A key component of our approach to patient comfort is the use of dental sedation. We even have options to limit the after effects of sedation! In today’s blog, your Prairie Village, KS, dentist talks about ensuring comfort for our patients with sedation and advanced technology.

When You Need Sedation

Our team could recommend a calming agent for our patients who have dental anxiety, which can make undergoing even minor procedures an uncomfortable experience. This can help those with special needs or a serious gag reflex too. We also help you stay comfortable when undergoing a more extensive treatment process. The option we choose will depend on factors like age, weight, medical history, any medications you are taking, and your anxiety levels.

Nitrous Oxide and Oral Conscious

Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, is a common and mild form of sedation that we can offer for kids and adults alike. Administering the medication is done through a mask over your nose. You breathe in a gas and enter a deep state of calm and relaxation. We can adjust the levels during treatment as needed, and the effects wear off once the procedure ends. In fact, you could return to work or school and could possibly even drive yourself home.

For a deeper state of calm, we have oral conscious. With both this and nitrous oxide, you remain conscious and able to respond to the dentist, even if you have little to no memory of the procedure. Oral sedation is a deeper state of calm and is administered through a pill or liquid prior to the procedure. When treatment ends, you may need time for the effects to wear off, so be sure you have a friend or family member on hand to take you home.

OraVerse®

Worried about the lingering effects of some calming medications, which can leave you groggy for several hours? We can offer an injection following your procedure that helps reduce the recovery time usually needed for the effects of calming treatments. You regain movement and feeling in your lips, which helps prevent drooling, discomfort, and slurred speech. You can return to normal in as little as one to two hours!
