What Can I Do About My Cavity?

If you think you have a cavity, you are probably right that something is wrong. While it may be tooth decay, it’s always possible that it’s something else entirely (or just a bit of irritation). To help you soar comfortably through the waiting period before you come in to see us (hint, hint), we offer up our suggestions. Remember that it’s always good to keep yourself out of pain but it’s also extremely important to see us for a checkup, so an untreated cavity does not remain untreated for long.

You Can Take OTC Meds

If you are dealing with what you think is tooth decay and it’s causing you some amount of discomfort, we generally suggest you do what you can to reduce that pain or soreness with over the counter (OTC) pain medication. This will help you get your tooth back to a comfortable level, so you can sleep, work, and everything else without the tooth bothering you.

You Can Avoid The Area

Don’t go overboard trying to clean the area, touching it with your tongue or anything else, or pretending nothing is wrong and using it to chew. Instead, do your best to avoid that area until we see you and can determine whether it’s tooth decay or something else, and how to proceed.

You Need To Schedule An Appointment

Yes, we just shifted from things you can do to something you need to do. If you continue doing your best to keep the cavity from bothering you but you don’t take care of the problem, you will find yourself with a more serious issue down the line. Come in for an examination, so we can then proceed with the treatment your tooth needs (likely a dental filling or dental crown).
