While most people can probably get their teeth whitened without a second thought, teeth whitening is not for everyone. In some cases, it just doesn’t work, and in other cases it may cause pain and sensitivity. For those who are candidates for a teeth whitening procedure, we offer a convenient take-home teeth whitening kit. If you’re not sure whether teeth whitening is for you, read on to find out more.
You Are a Candidate If…
The best candidates for teeth whitening are people who still have their natural teeth; their teeth and gums are healthy; their teeth have not been restored (they have no fillings); and they have strong tooth enamel. Also, teeth with yellow tones respond best to whitening.
You Are Not A Good Candidate If…
Under certain circumstances teeth whitening is not successful, or not recommended. People with gum disease, cavities, worn tooth enamel, or exposed roots are discouraged from getting their teeth whitened. Teeth and gums need to be in a healthy state for the procedure to be successful and not result in pain and/ or sensitivity. The roots of your teeth cannot be whitened because they are not protected by enamel.
Restorations
If some of your teeth have been restored using tooth-colored fillings, resin composite materials (bonding), or porcelain (crowns, veneers, bridges), then your teeth will not whiten evenly, because these materials do not successfully respond to bleaching procedures. Your natural teeth will whiten, but your restorations will not.
Sensitive Teeth
Individuals with sensitive teeth and gums, or receding gums, should consult with their dentist before whitening.
Peroxide Allergy
Whitening products contain peroxide as a whitening agent, so for those patients allergic to peroxide, tooth whitening is not recommended.
Age
Because the pulp chamber is enlarged in children under the age of 16, whitening can cause pulpal irritation and tooth sensitivity.
Pregnancy
Teeth whitening is not recommended in pregnant or lactating women.
