Bruxism/TMJ Treatment

Custom Appliances for Bruxism/TMJ Treatment

Dental plaque and oral bacteria are not the only threats to your dental health. For instance, bruxism and TMJ disorder affect your bite’s function, and therefore can affect your overall quality of life. Bruxism, or the unconscious grinding of your teeth, can cause damage to your teeth’s structures. TMJ disorder, a jaw dysfunction, involves damage to your jaw’s joints, and can lead to variety of symptoms and discomfort.

To treat bruxism and TMJ disorder, Dr. Browne can design a custom oral appliance, or mouthguard, for you to wear at night. The appliance will protect your teeth from grinding together, and/or hold your jaw in a more comfortable position to alleviate pressure on your jaw’s joints (temporomandibular joints, or TMJs).

Symptoms of Bruxism and TMJ Disorder

Though the conditions are different, bruxism and TMJ disorder are closely related. Patients with bruxism may be at a higher risk of damaging their TMJs, or their bruxism may be a symptom of already-existing TMJ disorder. If you exhibit any of the following symptoms, then you should speak with Dr. Browne about appropriate bruxism/TMJ treatment as soon as possible.

  • Overly-sensitive teeth
  • Popping/clicking noises in your jaw
  • Frequent headaches and migraines, especially in the morning
  • Difficulty opening and closing your mouth
  • Excessive wear on your teeth’s chewing surfaces
  • Sore or painful muscles in your jaw and face
  • Tinnitus, or ringing and pain in the ears
